Bringing Clear Vision and Care to Our Local Seniors
At VDM Optometrists, we believe that clear, comfortable vision is essential at every stage of life. While we spend a lot of time focusing on pediatric eye care and helping children thrive in the classroom, we are equally passionate about supporting the seniors in our community.
Recently, our team stepped out of our consultation rooms across the Western Cape and spent a wonderful week visiting local retirement villages. Our goal was simple: to bring essential eye care education and hands-on assistance directly to the residents.
Here is a look back at our time connecting with our local seniors.
Educating on Age-Related Eye Conditions
Understanding how our eyes change as we age is the first step in maintaining good vision and overall independence. During our visits, we hosted interactive presentations focused on the most common visual challenges faced by the elderly.
We took the time to break down two conditions in particular:
- Cataracts: We discussed how the natural lens of the eye gradually becomes cloudy over time, the signs to look out for (like glare when driving at night or colors looking faded), and the modern solutions available.
- Dry Eye Syndrome: A highly prevalent but often frustrating condition for seniors. We explained why tear production decreases with age and shared practical daily habits to alleviate burning, gritty, and watering eyes.
Our Pop-Up Spectacle Service Station
Education is important, but there is nothing quite like immediate, practical help. After our presentations, we set up a complimentary spectacle service station for the residents.
For many seniors, travelling to an optometrist just to have their glasses tightened can be a logistical challenge. We spent hours chatting with the residents while we:
- Performed deep-cleaning on their lenses and frames.
- Replaced missing or loose screws.
- Adjusted bent frames for a more comfortable fit.
- Replaced worn-out nose pads.
Providing this service at no charge was our way of giving back to the community that has supported our practice group over the years. Seeing the immediate relief on a resident’s face when their glasses no longer slide down their nose is incredibly rewarding!
