Busting the Top 7 Eye Care Myths
What Your Optometrist Wants You to Know

When it comes to your eyes, there’s no shortage of well-meaning advice – and just as many myths.

At VDM Optometrists, we often hear the same misconceptions passed from friend to friend, generation to generation. The trouble is, following bad advice can lead to unnecessary worry… or worse, real damage to your vision.

Let’s set the record straight on some of the most common eye care myths.

1. “Reading in dim light will damage your eyes.”
While poor lighting can make your eyes work harder, it won’t cause permanent harm. You might feel eye strain, headaches, or fatigue, but your vision won’t be ruined. For comfort, use adequate lighting – your eyes will thank you.

2. “Wearing glasses makes your vision worse.”
Glasses don’t weaken your eyesight – they simply correct your vision so you can see clearly. If you feel your prescription changes over time, that’s usually due to natural changes in your eyes, not because you’ve been wearing glasses.

3. “Sitting too close to the TV will ruin your eyes.”
This myth likely started when TVs emitted more harmful radiation decades ago (something modern screens don’t do). Sitting close may cause temporary strain or fatigue, but it won’t cause long-term damage.

4. “Carrots are the ultimate key to perfect vision.”
Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which is important for eye health – but eating them won’t give you superhuman sight. A balanced diet with leafy greens, colourful vegetables, and omega-3-rich fish is far more beneficial overall.

5. “Eye exercises can fix all vision problems.”
While certain exercises can help with specific focusing or coordination issues, they can’t reverse conditions like nearsightedness or astigmatism. There’s no magic workout that will replace your glasses or contact lenses.

6. “Only older people get eye diseases.”
Many conditions, like glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy, can develop at any age. Children can also experience vision issues that, if left untreated, affect their learning and development. Regular eye exams are important for everyone.

7. “If your eyes feel fine, you don’t need an eye exam.”
Not all eye conditions cause symptoms in their early stages. Diseases like glaucoma can progress silently until vision loss occurs. Routine check-ups are the best way to detect and treat problems early.
